Images Of War: The Crushing Of Army Group North 1944-1945: Rare Photographs From Wartime Archives
- World War II, Modern Warfare
Death knell in the North
Germany's Army Group North enjoyed astounding success in the war's early stages-but as the Russian campaign wore on, its setbacks became insurmountable. This collection of rare, previously unpublished images chronicles the last bitter months fought on Russian soil, and the disastrous Baltic defensive that ensued.
These remarkable photographs-of soldiers, armor and equipment, terrain, and more-vividly capture the desperation of German forces as they fought to the death in the last few pockets of land surrounding three ports of Libau in Kurland, Pillau in East Prussia, and Danzig at the mouth of the River Vistula. It was here that Army Group North would make its final stand in an unprecedented battle of attrition and ultimate annihilation.
