In the Graveyard of Empires

Longtime Afghanistan expert and RAND analyst Seth G. Jones watched as American optimism evaporated after the defeat of the Taliban in 2001 and, just four years later, a new “war of a thousand cuts” had brought Afghanistan to its knees. With In the Graveyard of Empires, Jones harnesses important new historical research on insurgencies and integrates thousands of declassified government documents to offer a penetrating and definitive account of the American experience in Afghanistan, from the rise of the Taliban to the depths of the insurgency. As Jones shows, the siphoning of resources to the Iraq war left U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan ineffectual and without support. Through interviews with prominent figures, including ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and commander Karl Eikenberry, Jones explains how a growing sanctuary for insurgents in Pakistan and a collapsing government in Kabul catalyzed the Taliban resurgence. Examining what has worked thus far—and what hasn’t—Jones argues that we must take a radically new approach to the war if the United States is to avoid the disastrous fate that has befallen every world power to enter the region, from Alexander the Great to the Soviet Union.

The book was well written and comprehensive in scope. I found it fascinating, and no, it does not deal with specific military engagements. Seth Jones does give you an oversight of the complexities that this country is facing in Afghanistan, the failed policies of previous administrations in working in the country, and the daunting task that the current one is facing in their attempt to unravel the myriad issues in the region.

Don't expect much action in this book....

This book is a well written study of American policy in Afghanistan, it's many failures and some successes, it studies Afghan politics and their recent violent history, it offers few examples of battles between coalition forces and insurgents, if you are looking for a book about the fighting in Afghanistan than steer clear of this one, but if you are looking for a deep study of a complex war than this one is for you.
