Fighting Techniques of Naval Warfare: 1190 BC - Present

From Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses III’s victory over the piratical Sea Peoples in 1190 BC to the latest computerized technology used on today’s high-tech vessels, Michael F. Pavkovic’s Fighting Techniques of Naval Warfare is a splendid visual showcase of the tactics, techniques and weaponry of naval warfare from the ancient period to the modern day.

Beginning with the major naval engagements of the ancient era, this spectacularly illustrated volume explores the development of fighting vessels, from the galley to the cog to the fireship. It also celebrates the age of sail, from the early seventeenth century to the late eighteenth century, through such famous encounters as Medway in 1667. And it chronicles the shift from the last great fighting sailing ships at battles such as Trafalgar in 1805 to the advent of steam-powered ironclads at Mobile Bay over 60 years later. Finally, it takes us from the use of armored battleships in the early twentieth century to the revolutionary introduction of aircraft carriers during World War II.

Using specially-commissioned color maps and black-and-white artworks, Fighting Techniques of Naval Warfare is an essential guide to sea combat through the ages.

Great Illustrations - uninspired text

I bought this book expecting it to be an all-encompassing history of naval warfare. Instead, it is a series of vignettes focused on a small number of key battles. For example, the entirety of World War II is reduced to two battles. Each of the battles highlighted is well done and the pictures included in the text are excellent. The focus of each is on strategy and fighting techniques of the era. The writing is accessable and clear with a relatively consistent tone givne that it was written by a team of authors.
