As ground troops fought tooth and nail on the savage battlefields of the Pacific Theater, both terrified and mystified by the seemingly endless wave of suicidal Japanese soldiers, thousands of feet above that hell on earth 35 courageous men of Torpedo Squadron Eight risked everything to support their outmatched fleet—many of them flying outmoded aircraft armed with dud torpedos. Despite the terrible odds, they succeeded in leading the Navy to ultimate victory and becoming the most decorated squadron of the war. The accolades, however, were hard-earned: No air squadron in U.S. history suffered as many losses.
A Dawn Like Thunder takes the reader to the deadly skies thousands of feet over the islands and waters of the Pacific, where battle lines were nonexistent and death came from all directions. Robert J. Mrazek focuses his sights on the individual men of the nearly forgotten Torpedo Squadron and the perilous battles they fought, from Midway to Guadalcanal—as well as a shocking cover-up story that cost the lives of many. In the spirit of such greats as Stephen Ambrose and Alex Kershaw, A Dawn Like Thunder is “small-unit” combat narrative at its very best.

An incredible story, and an excellent job of writing. This was one of the best books I've read in a while. The overall layout of the book, with getting to know key people a first, then the day to day aspect of the later chapters, made it hard to put down.
READ THIS BOOK!!!!!

Robert Mrazek has created a fantastic book in telling the story of Torpedo Squadron 8. From Pearl Harbor to The Battle of Midway to Guadacanal the research in this book is incredible! He brings the individual pilots to life and draws you into their lives. Absolutely one of my favorite books. I found myself going back and re-reading sections of it. It is just that good I wanted to read it again! Buy it, read it, you will not be dissappointed.

This book is well written. Mrazek has done a great job of bring the characters to life in the in his words and with their own words. Even when the main characters are gone he doesn't miss a beat. I think he did the real heroes of Torpedo Squadron Eight justice. Even with "Swede" Mrazek showed Larsen's short comings but also let the part of his bravery shine.

This Book is just awesome! I was totally engulfed and engrossed by this book. I just could not put it down. Not only a history of Midway but the best history I have read of Guadalcanal. You must buy this book if you want some great Naval/Marine history.
