World War II was a conflict like no other, not just for its magnitude but also for its sheer complexity. Putting the pieces together in a logical format, World War II: The Definitive Visual History masterfully traces the war’s contours. It also brings together photographs that span the entire conflict, illuminating it in a way that no purely textual history could ever do.
The book is divided into nine chronological chapters, each introduced by an overview and timeline. The main sections, which cover everything from the rise of Nazism to the war’s aftermath, feature detailed text, notable quotes, and “Before” and “After” sidebars that put each of the war’s facets into its larger context. Interspersed throughout the book, you’ll find a wealth of features, including biographical spreads that profile key players; “Eyewitness” spreads with riveting photos and firsthand accounts of such single events as Leningrad, Dunkirk and VE Day, and a variety of galleries showing everything from weaponry to propaganda pieces to memorabilia from the home fronts.
A seamless marriage of dramatic photos and concise text, World War II: The Definitive Visual History puts the war’s vast panorama into dramatic focus.

Many books that try to give a complete overview of WW II wind up up focusing on one area of the conflict an not giving proper coverage to less well-known theaters of the war. This book avoids that. Building on its similar treatment of WWI, the publisher has given a rich, almost multi-media, presentation of the 2nd World War.
There are many "new" photographs not seem in other publications, and the pictures of equipment, uniforms, etc. add another dimension to the work
It makes the war, the societies affected by the war, and the politics/economics of the time very accessible.

This book provides powerful documentary while offering outstanding time lines to assist you in putting the actions throughout both Theaters of Operation. I have been building a WWII library over the last few years and this is a fabulous addition to it.

This is a great addition to my ever growing library of WWII related books. The maps and photos are fantastic. The book does a good job of summing things up because it can not go in depth on every part of the war.
