Not since the days of the East India Company and the American Revolution has such a large and lethal independent fighting force been assembled as the private contractors fighting in Iraq. With Highway to Hell, John Geddes becomes the first contractor to offer a firsthand look at life in the “second biggest army in Iraq.”
Whether he’s taking out insurgents with a sniper rifle while nursing the mother of all hangovers, providing security to a cameraman during a shootout on the rooftop of a Baghdad hotel alongside Kalashnikov-wielding Iraqi waiters, or accompanying an oil executive to a meeting in the heart of darkness of Sadr City, each of Geddes’ adventures presents a stunning, chilling snapshot of contemporary warfare.

This book tells it like it is, although I am sure he cleaned it up a tad. If I ever met this man I'd buy him a pint, maybe 2, or we'd just get smashed. The book is in depth and the author takes close care to not pic sides between the insurgents and the armies who fight against them. I strongly recomend this book.

Geddes does an execellant job on PMC issues but adds good stuff on COIN warfare. Before reading this, I'd have defended Blackwater, but as he describes their tactics, I got more outraged. COIN warfare requires winning hearts and minds and PMC's are part of this war and need to remember the end game goals. I would have said, before reading this book, that low profile is the best route for staying alive there and he confirmed it. Circumstances dictate tactics and the commonwealth PMC's understand that better than we do. I like his ability to criticize and the cred he had to do it with. SAS are hard to argue with.

this book was entertaining when Gedds talked about the conflicts he was involved in. However, he obviously has dislikes and lets those known too. He made several referals to HIS company that he now owns... Mr. Geddes this was a good book but we could do without the "Blackwater" bashing. we want to hear about your encounters not your opinion of them, the media, the U.S. Government....ect.
