In the words of General George S. Patton, Jr., “Wars might be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of the man who leads that gains the victory.” Paying magnificent tribute to the greatest among history’s military leaders, this illustrated volume examines the history of war through the eyes of titans ranging from Cyrus the Great in the 6th century BC to Vo Nguyen Giap in the 20th. Worldwide in scope, the book ranges from China, India and Africa to Europe and the Americas, focusing on over 100 major military leaders, their associates and their opponents. All the great commanders are here—Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Wellington, Ulysses S. Grant, Georgy Zhukov—plus such less familiar figures as János Hunyadi and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The book’s oversized format allows for a full display of illustrations, from portraits and battlefield scenes to weapons and uniforms, plus spectacular battle reconstructions—and the sections focusing on major leaders feature specially commissioned campaign maps, fact files, sidebars and fascinating quotations. In all, a truly fitting display of military leadership at its finest. Additional 99¢ shipping charge.

If you want to find out the essencial about a general or great military leader before going to a in-depth biography this is the book. Great when you wanto to know a little bit of almost all the gratest military leaders of all time. But I would have included Gen. Macarthur in there.

--- You CAN'T possibly cover the entire panoply of military history in one volume; THIS effort is perhaps the best attempt I've seen... Like Mr. Grant's work "BATTLE AT SEA", this book, lavishly illustrated and packed with sidebars & battle-maps gives a concise overview of every era (in limited space!!)... Men often unsung; i.e. Moltke, Marlborough, Cromwell & Gustavus Adolphus get their due while sidebars admirably cover so-called 'lessers' like Yi-Sun Shin, Nathaniel Greene & Philip of Macedon... Their campaigns are well-documented and desribed... This is another 'coffee table' book anyone would be proud to have in their study... Like the 'Captains' it chronicles, THIS one's a winner!!
